Volkswagen Reveals the First All-Electric GTI Concept

Volkswagen is revolutionizing the iconic GTI legacy, merging tradition with innovation in the electrifying ID. GTI Concept. Having premiered at this year’s IAA Mobility in Munich (September 5 to 9, 2023), this groundbreaking vehicle marks the evolution of GTI into the electric age. Based on the attention-grabbing ID. 2all concept we saw back in March, the ID. GTI Concept represents a significant leap forward into the world of electric automotive.

This electric marvel offers an unparalleled driving experience, blending the electric ID. GTI Concept with the heritage of the turbocharged Golf GTI. Equipped with a front-axle differential lock controlled by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager, it introduces intelligent traction control to Volkswagen’s electric lineup. The GTI Experience Control in the center console allows drivers to customize the powertrain, running gear, steering, sound, and even simulated shift points, reminiscent of classic GTI models like the 1976 Golf GTI and the 2001 Golf GTI. This feature turns the ID. GTI Concept into a dynamic time machine, bridging the past and future seamlessly.

Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at Volkswagen, reflects on the ID. GTI Concept’s genesis: “The ID. GTI Concept realizes the future of the GTI philosophy within Volkswagen. Starting with the powerful ID. 2all as the foundation, the electric GTI is no longer a mere concept but a reality. This vehicle marks a significant step, projecting the GTI idea into the era of electric mobility.”

Visually striking, the ID. GTI Concept sports the signature red radiator grille surround, emphasizing its connection to the iconic GTI lineage. The meticulously designed exterior includes motorsport-inspired elements, such as the black front splitter and honeycomb air intake. Vertical LED daytime running lights, reminiscent of the original Golf GTI, enhance the vehicle’s aerodynamics and visual appeal. The rear end boasts a black roof spoiler and LED taillights, paying homage to the classic GTI design elements while embracing the future.

Inside, the ID. GTI Concept offers a blend of retro charm and modern sophistication. Plaid-patterned sport seats reminiscent of the first Golf GTI, a three-spoke steering wheel, and the GTI Heartbeat sensor evoke a sense of nostalgia while showcasing advanced technology. The multifunction steering wheel with GTI Experience Control, coupled with customizable digital displays, adds to the immersive driving experience.
