Volkswagen Integrates ChatGPT into its Vehicles

January 22nd, 2024 by

Your new Volkswagen could be smarter than you think. Volkswagen unveiled their innovative integration of the artificial-intelligence-based chatbot ChatGPT into its IDA voice assistant at CES 2024, the prominent electronics trade fair that took place from January 9 to 12. This groundbreaking feature, powered by Cerence Chat Pro, marks a significant advancement, making Volkswagen the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature in numerous production vehicles starting in the second quarter of 2024.

The integration was showcased in various models, including ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the new Tiguan, the new Passat, and the new Golf. Cerence Chat Pro provides the foundation for this intelligent ChatGPT integration, offering an array of capabilities beyond conventional voice control. Through the IDA voice assistant, drivers can seamlessly control infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and even obtain answers to general knowledge questions. The introduction of AI-enhanced capabilities to provide extensive information on various topics promises a more enriching and interactive driving experience.

Activation of the voice assistant is effortless, triggered by saying “Hello IDA” or pressing the steering wheel button. The voice assistant, prioritizing and executing various functions, communicates with users in an intuitive manner. If a query falls beyond the purview of the Volkswagen system, it is anonymized and directed to AI, with the familiar Volkswagen voice responding accordingly.

Crucially, ChatGPT does not access vehicle data, ensuring robust data protection. Cerence Chat Pro manages this by leveraging diverse sources, including ChatGPT, to enable IDA to furnish relevant responses to a wide range of inquiries. Security and seamless integration align with the priority of delivering a user-friendly experience for drivers.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, underscored the company’s commitment to democratizing technology and making it accessible to a broad audience. Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, expressed pride in the partnership with Volkswagen, highlighting the potential for future collaborations to design a new, large language model (LLM)-based user experience for Volkswagen’s next-generation in-car assistant.
