Implementing the North American Standard in Electric Vehicles

The electric future continues to expand with Volkswagen at the helm. Last month, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors jointly announced their commitment to implementing the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for upcoming products in the North American region, starting in 2025. As the electric future expands, this standardization will aim to enhance customer charging options and interoperability.

In a move to broaden charging provider choices for existing customers with Combined Charging System (CCS) ports, the brands are exploring adapter solutions for accessing the Tesla Supercharger network. This endeavor could potentially extend customer charging access to over 15,000 Superchargers, in addition to the 3,800+ DC fast charging outlets already operated by Electrify America and Electrify Canada.

Electrify America has affirmed its intention to incorporate the NACS connector at charging stations by 2025, further supporting CCS compatibility.

Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating, “This is great news for our electric vehicle customers in the North American Region,” emphasizing the potential for broader access to charging points for vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4.

Rebecca Tinucci, Senior Director of Charging at Tesla, noted the collaborative effort among major automotive manufacturers, emphasizing the shared vision of enhancing charging experiences for all electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

Porsche Cars North America’s President and CEO, Timo Resch, announced plans to partner with Tesla in 2025 to significantly expand the charger network throughout the U.S., providing greater charging accessibility for Porsche EV customers.

Scott Keogh, President and CEO of Scout Motors, emphasized the customer-centric approach, stating, “Engineering NACS connectors into our vehicles from the onset will give Scout customers access to a vast and quickly expanding fast-charging network spanning North America.”

Details about the integration of the Tesla North American Charging Standard into specific models will be disclosed closer to the anticipated launch date in 2025.
