Volkswagen Expands Redwood Battery Recycling Collab

Last month, Volkswagen of America, Inc. and Redwood Materials, Inc. began offering a convenient way for consumers to recycle their battery powered devices. With it’s official launch on this year’s Earth Day, this new project includes Redwood bins found in participating dealerships for an easy and safe drop off of rechargeable batteries and consumer devices. This includes things like cell phones, laptops, tablets, cordless power tools, electric toothbrushes, wireless headphones, and old vacuum batteries.

This collaboration between Volkswagen and Redwood began last year with the goal of recycling all Volkswagen and Audi EV battery packs as part of a shared vision to create a circular EV economy. According to Redwood, their technology is able to recover 95% of critical minerals from recycled batteries, allowing them to recreate battery components that then get sent back to the EV manufacturing plant. If adopted across the industry, battery recycling programs like this could help reduce battery costs as well as the need to mine and ship raw materials.

“Volkswagen’s goal is to provide more accessible and more sustainable electric mobility for American drivers,” said Andrew Savvas, Executive Vice President, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Volkswagen North American Region. “By engaging our dealers, Volkswagen is providing access for consumers to contribute to sustainable mobility.”

As the year progresses, more dealerships and drop off locations will be opening across the country for consumers to participate in batter recycling
